Flies to Tokyo to attend the 21st International Conference on the Future of Asia
21 May 2015– Finance Secretary Cesar V. Purisima flies to Tokyo today for the 21st International Conference on the Future of Asia. On 22 May, Purisima will share his thoughts on Asia’s trajectory beyond 2015 in pursuit of lasting peace and prosperity.
Held at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, the International Conference on The Future of Asia is an annual convergence of political, economic, and thought leaders. The conference advances ideas on the future of the Asia-Pacific and explores frontiers of development for the region’s economies.
This year’s conference uniquely highlights the inauguration of the ASEAN Economic Community later this year and the expected integration. As such, discussions will revolve around regional security and economic integration, as well as emerging needs on infrastructure development and finance.
Purisima plans to speak about the impact of the ASEAN Economic Community and the Philippines’ critical role in its success. He is likewise expected to lay out the path ahead and the tasks for the Asia-Pacific region in the medium-term. Juxtaposing ASEAN’s future with Japan’s, Purisima will also expound on Japan’s role and responsibility amidst global and regional challenges, as well as its strategic cooperation with ASEAN.
Purisima has long advocated for more intra-regional trade alongside promoting the Philippines and ASEAN as a global investment hub. In Tokyo, Purisima will explain why the fundamentals are ripe for ASEAN to elevate its place in the world as an integrated regional supply chain.
Purisima is also expected to underscore the interstices between economics and politics in charting sustainable growth trajectories. Drawing from the Philippine experience in good governance producing great economic returns, Purisima’s speech will touch on the positive feedback loop that reformed political institutions create.
