The Year has been declared by the United Nations as the International Year of Microcredit. The year-long celebration aims to highlight the important contributions of microfinance in poverty alleviation as well as to promote the further development of sustainable and inclusive microfinance services worldwide.

The Philippines, together with the rest of the UN system, celebrates and commemorates the significance of microfinance in uplifting the lives of the Filipino Entreprenuerial Poor.
